Ferrying freight, passengers and post between Berlin and Wriezen from 1898, the Wriezener train line saw its glory days in the 1920’s. In 1949, the infrastructural inlet, which spilled into Ostbahnhof (East Station) ceased to carry passengers, instead becoming absorbed into the DDR apparatus and serving as a “West Post” check-point. By 1989, with the fall of the wall and dominance of road freight, the Wriezener Bahnhof ceased to exist. In 2005, the tracks were torn up and much of the surrounding rail yards appropriated for use by German mega-stores Metro and Hellweg. But in a quiet corner of the site, amidst a tangle of black-berries, the Offtentlicher park, is an urban renewal project being undertaken by Berlin based architects Freiraumlabor and the local community. The slender platform is dotted with a series of small timber platforms, a BMX track dug in the dirt, several well hidden tomato plants and my favorite gesture; a chalk-board, which folds out to form a classroom.
